[GDC] MMU Closed DOTA Tournament Report

Posted by mmugdc on August 28, 2008

The long awaited MMU Closed Tournament has successfully ended on Saturday! Thanks to the organizing committees that brought a wonderful time to the participants!!

The DOTA tournament had 13 groups competing, started at 10am sharp. Everyone came for the same purpose: matching their playing skills with others.

The event went on in 2 rooms: FITAR1001 and FITAR1003.

Some gamers brought their own ‘fighting weapons’—their own keyboard, mouse, mousepad and themselves, of coz! 😛

The winners sat there to wait for the next opponent, while some of them were still discussing about their last game to sharpen their skills and strategies.

The gamers carried on after their lunch (supposed to play better with full tummy, I guess, hehe).

Finally after many exciting and magnificent games, we have the champion, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up. They are SS, Makanan, and Food! (what’s the difference between ‘makanan’ and ‘food’ btw?? Lolz)

Champion: SS

1st Runner-up: Makanan

2nd Runner-up: Food

The event ended with a prize giving ceremony and everyone was satisfied. But for the losers, don’t give up and sharpen your skills for next year!

[GDC] Lan Party Report

Posted by mmugdc on August 20, 2008

This LAN party was held on Saturday, but it also attracted lots of the MMU students, both male and female, to attend it as we rarely can find this kind of opportunity to gather around with friends to play with in such a nice well-conditioned glass room.

This event the players enjoyed games like Counter-strike, Warcraft 3(for the maps we have Pyramid Escape, DOTA, X-Hero Siege…) and other online games as well. Besides the electronic ones, we also have some people playing board games, World of Warcraft.

Warcraft 3, the most interesting games in 2008 of all……as well as CS.

No matter it’s a notebook or PC, we brought whatever that we can get to have fun!

The gathering was supplied with some refreshments to quench our thirst and fill some empty stomachs.

The gathering started at around at 10am and ended at 10pm as well, but it was very interesting till everybody was like refusing to stop as the time was going to end, lolz.

Looks like the event was very successful and hope that we’ll be having another one soon.

• If team 1 have killed 5+ heroes more than team 2 during the period of the last save game and the disconnection, then the disconnect is in the favour of team 1. For example:
– At the time of the save game the score is 35-35
– At the time of the disconnection the score is 42-37 for team 1
– Since team 1 have killed 5+ heroes more than team 2, team 1 may now chose whether to continue the match or remake from the save game.
– An Aegis counts for 1 kill .
– A tower counts for 3 kills when calculating this, down.
– A rax counts for 5 kills.

• The teams must save game right after first blood

• If neither team is in advantage then an admin should be consulted, unless teams can agree to a decision by themselves.

• After a remake all players have to pick the same heroes as before, buys the same items and must go to the same starting lane. On initial creep contact, the players may change lane.

• If the team disconnects more than 3 times, then the opposing team may chose to continue the match without the dropped player.

• It is allowed to use a disconnected hero, but it is not allowed to give his items to other players or buy any item for the hero. His Item should be remained on himself only.

l If a player does not agree with a ruling, he/she can express his/her protest to a referee after the completion of a half. Any intentional refusal to connect to the match server can result in a default loss for that team with the decision to be made at the sole discretion of the board of referees.
Any form of cheating, including but not limited to intentional disconnects, ping flooding, server crashing, etc., will result in immediate disqualification of the competitor and/or team.

Failure to follow the rules will result in that person’s permanent removal from the tournament.

l The tournament area is restricted only to tournament competitors. Competitors are not allowed to enter the tournament area with companions that are not participating in the tournament.

l The board of referees reserves the right to refuse any item into the tournament area.

l Competitors are required to be punctual for their scheduled matches, and are only allowed a fifteen-minute grace period before they are forfeited. While tardiness is not tolerated, the board of referees reserves the right to extend the grace period in specific instances or under extenuating circumstances. While the board of referees will remain impartial to competitors, it will make exceptions should it be to the better of the tournament. Repeated cases of tardiness will not be tolerated.

l Scheduled match times represent the estimated time of the actual match start, not the time that a competitor must report to the tournament area. Competitors must report to the tournament area at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time.

l Competitors will be allowed to report to the tournament area and begin client setup as early as conditions allow, up to 30 minutes prior to scheduled match times. Teams that show up after the required check-in time will be required to start their match at the scheduled time, regardless if they have had warm-up time or not.

l Competitors may not leave the tournament area between halves or before overtime. Teams will be allowed 5 minutes before the start of overtime in the tournament area to go over strategy.

l Upon match completion, competitors should promptly remove their hardware, straighten up their assigned area and exit the tournament area.

Competitor and Spectator Conduct

l Competitors will conduct themselves in a reasonable manner, maintaining a friendly and polite demeanor to spectators, competitors, members of the press, Tournament Staff, and to other participants of the event.

l Competitors must be available for post-tournament awards ceremonies, photographs, interviews, or other tournament events.

l Competitors must remain quiet when inside the designated tournament area. Talking is permitted, but must be kept at a reasonable level, and away from other competitors. It is strictly forbidden for spectators to communicate with a player while he or she is competing.

l Spectators are not allowed in the tournament area.

l Spectators or general event participants outside the designated tournament area, such as viewers of the tournament projection screens, are permitted to cheer, but specific clues or hints may not be given to the competitors.

l Competitors will refrain from the use of vulgar language during the entire competition. All rules of conduct also apply to chatting through the game console.

l Competitors are expected to compete in a professional manner. Throwing a match, halting play without cause, or showing a flagrant lack of effort will be construed as a violation of player conduct, and will result in match forfeit and disqualification from the tournament.

l Spectators are encouraged to remain quiet while at the sidelines of the spectator area, and be mindful of the privilege of viewing tournament matches at such a close proximity.

l At the conclusion of match play, teams are expected to break down their equipment in an orderly manner. Teams need to straighten their tournament area up once they break down. Please take into consideration that other matches may be taking place and it would be unsportsmanlike to disturb other competitors while competing.

l Teams are responsible for returning their assigned match area to the condition it was in prior to play. Teams who fail to do so may be penalized and will be called back to the tournament area to straighten the tables and equipment back up.

These rules are subject to modification in the following aspects:

l Use of most recent patch/version release of each official game within tournament committee’s own discretion.

l In-game settings and required factors necessitated by use of most recent patch version/release.

l Cheat Protection Program release and/or cheat protection functions.

l Game settings and/or operations guidelines dictated by differences between online and LAN tournaments.

[GDC] Card and Board Games Gathering Report #4

Posted by mmugdc on August 1, 2008

This week we had our card and board games gathering as usual but with the venue changed to FITCR2002 because of midterm tests. The beginning of the gathering was very quiet since there was a midterm test going on in the classroom beside. Well, this week we had an important guest, which is our GDC advisor, Mr. Wong.

Mr. Wong is playing the investment game, Acquire, with GDC members!

Zoo building!!!! Got pandas, zebras, camels, and lots more cute animals…..^^

This week, board games like Blockus, The Settlers of Catan, Zooloretto and more are played by the members. There are more than 30 people who attended this gathering although there were midterm tests going on.

Stress from midterm?? It’s ok….relax and play a board game. XD

The gathering ended at around 11pm as usual. Some stayed on to finish their games as fast as they could. Everyone had a great time once again and we hope to see you after the mid-term break. So happy holidays everyone!! Game on!!
